Aaron Ramsdale shares what Mikel Arteta told him before Arsenal win
The Gunners have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League after a dominant win against Antonio Conte’s side. An own goal from Hugo Lloris and a strike from Martin Odegaard put Arsenal in control before the break.
Tottenham came back into the game in the second-half. However, whenever they did create a chance, Ramsdale was there to maintain Arsenal’s lead. He made seven saves during the game, including a couple of massive stops from the likes of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.
Ramsdale shares what Arteta told him before Arsenal win
Gary Neville named Ramsdale his man of the match. And after the game, the England international shared what Arteta said to him before the contest which motivated him even more.
“The manager also mentioned obviously the last quite a few North London derbies, we haven’t kept a clean sheet either, especially when he’s been in charge, so I think that might have spurred me on a little bit,” he told Sky Sports.
Arsenal had played Tottenham six times under Arteta before Sunday’s game. And they had failed to keep a single clean sheet in any of those fixtures. They conceded 10 goals in that run.
So you can understand why Arteta felt it was significant that Arsenal kept a clean sheet. It was always going to be another indicator of how far they have come since he took charge in 2019.
They were grateful to Ramsdale for ensuring that there was no nervy finish with a number of excellent saves. But it would have been a travesty had Arsenal not won that game given how the contest played out.
Arsenal now go into their clash with Manchester United eight points clear at the top of the table. And they have still not conceded a single goal in 2023.
