Aaron Ramsdale reacts to William Saliba's start to the season
Aaron Ramsdale has labelled William Saliba a Rolls-Royce, but suggested that the likes of himself, Gabriel Magalhaes and Thomas Partey do still have to dig the Arsenal youngster out for making mistakes, in comments reported by Goal.
Saliba has been one of the stars of the show in the early stages of this season. Certainly, it is hard to think of too many defenders who have been more impressive so far.
The Frenchman got his long-awaited chance at the heart of the Arsenal defence. And he has taken the opportunity with both hands, forcing Ben White to stay out at right-back.
William Saliba a Rolls-Royce, but still making mistakes
Saliba proved a further point at the weekend as the Gunners won the North London derby in some style. At one stage, the 21-year-old calmly dribbled through a crowd of players inside his own penalty area. Meanwhile, he managed to nutmeg Oliver Skipp with an audacious touch.
Arsenal fans are probably struggling to envisage Saliba doing anything wrong right now. But Ramsdale shared how those around him are working hard to play their part in bringing the best out of the youngster.
“He is a bit of a Rolls-Royce with the way he moves and he has never seemed phased.”
“He is a young boy so still makes mistakes, so at the minute it is either Ben (White), myself, Gabriel or Thomas Partey digging him out and he is digging other people out as well,” he said, as reported by Goal.
“That is the main thing at the minute, our mistakes aren’t leading to too many things and that is the sign of a team with good characters in and around that back five.”
There does appear to be a really good mentality amongst the squad. None of the players seem to have too big an ego. And with that, Saliba probably views the moments where his teammates do give him grief as things to learn from.
Similarly, no player in the Arsenal side probably has an issue when Saliba takes exception with something they have done.
The Gunners are still a work in progress. But there is something special building amongst the group that Mikel Arteta and Edu have put together.
