Aaron Ramsdale lauds Arsenal teammate Matt Turner ahead of World Cup
Turner remains something of an unknown quantity at Arsenal. The 28-year-old is still awaiting the chance to make his debut in the Premier League.
He has made a handful of appearances in the Europa League. But, unsurprisingly, Ramsdale has ensured that he has had little to do in the top-flight.
Ramsdale lauds Matt Turner
So there will be a sense of intrigue amongst Gunners fans ahead of the USMNT’s World Cup campaign. Turner looks set to be the American’s first-choice at the tournament having taken the number one jersey.
And of course, that could mean that Turner faces a number of his Arsenal teammates. Along with Ramsdale, Ben White and Bukayo Saka are also in the England squad for Qatar.
Ramsdale was asked about his relationship with Turner ahead of the tournament. And he was full of praise for the summer signing. He also suggested that he is looking forward to facing him in 10 days time.
“The way I describe him, he is Tigger. He wants to say yes at everything. He has the classic American attitude where he says yes, he wants to do things. He wants to try things, he’s always happy, smiling,” he told ESPN.
“He’s fighting a losing battle at the minute because there’s probably six or seven English lads in the dressing room. I think even the foreigners are giving him a little bit as well. But that would be special if both of us are at either end or he’s playing, or I’m playing.
“It will be a great game and I’ll be able to watch him of course as a friend. But for that 90 minutes, we want to win. I want him to have a good game, but at the end of the day, we want the win in that group,” he added.
Good opportunity ahead for backup goalkeeper
It is going to be a good opportunity for Turner’s stock to increase. Unfortunately, the safe bet is that Ramsdale is unlikely to feature too much with Jordan Pickford taking the number one spot.
Of course, Mikel Arteta is hardly going to make any drastic decisions off the back of the World Cup. Ramsdale has been a revelation since joining the Gunners.
But the USMNT have a good side. And they may be one team to keep an eye on.
That may present Turner with a really good opportunity to show more of his potential ahead of the second-half of the season with Arsenal.
