Aaron Lennon’s attacking struggles shows Tottenham were right to sell in 2015

Aaron Lennon is one of Tottenham Hotspur’s most decorated players, with 364 appearances for the club — the most of any active ex-player.

Yet despite his storied history with Spurs, the winger’s current attacking struggles reveal Tottenham were justified in their decision to offload Lennon back in 2015.

The Englishman joined Everton on a permanent deal in September 2015, yet never set Goodison Park on fire. In 77 appearances over three seasons, Lennon played a hand in just 15 goals, scoring nine and setting up six.

And in a bid to regain his form and seek a change in environment, the winger moved to Burnley in January 2018.

However, his time at Turf Moor has been far from prolific, bagging just a solitary goal and setting up three in 31 matches.

In all, it appears Tottenham Hotspur sold Lennon at the perfect time. A player blessed with searing pace and a knack for getting into superb attacking positions, Lennon’s career has steadily declined ever since leaving White Hart Lane.

The 2015 sale of Aaron Lennon was an astute decision by Tottenham Hotspur, offloading the experienced winger at the ideal moment for the club.
