‘A travesty if true’: Some Arsenal fans dismayed by worrying report

A number of Arsenal fans have been commenting on Twitter about the report in The Mirror claiming the contracts of 10 part-time Gunners scouts will not be renewed in June.

The scouts, who helped discover the likes of Bukayo Saka, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith-Rowe and Joe Willock, were reportedly given the “bombshell” news on Thursday.

The report claims that it’s a cost-cutting measure by Arsenal in response to the global health crisis, and that all 10 of them earn £800 per month and expenses.

The Mirror said Arsenal hoped to re-hire the scouts – who were informed of the decision via e-mail – later in the year, but that they would have to apply for their old jobs and go through safeguarding checks again.

“These guys are among the best youth scouts in the country,” a source told the outlet. “This is one of the biggest clubs in the world making these sort of cutbacks but football is like a village and every other club will now know they are available.”

It was reported by on Thursday that Arsenal could lose as much as £144 million if next season is played behind-closed-doors, a state of affairs that could extend to many clubs worldwide, and as such, cuts are sadly to be expected in such situations.
