Former England midfielder, Trevor Sinclair, has lauded Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and admitted he could tell he was going to be a success right away.

Watkins has been rewarded for a fine Premier League season with a call into the England squad by Gareth Southgate. Watkins’ goals and hard work leading the line for Villa have impressed, with the striker beating Leeds ace Patrick Bamford to the punch.

And speaking to Talksport today, Sinclair admits he has been impressed with Watkins’ attitude and fitness levels, as well as his will to improve even further.

“When you meet him, you realise he’s a thoroughbred athlete. I could see it happening for him. I could see that pathway because of his work ethic and the humbleness about him when you meet him,” Sinclair said.

“He’s working hard all the time. I’ve seen him say he’s met Harry Kane and wants to improve. That’s what managers want to work with. I’m sure he’s going to do well.”

Watkins will be hoping to get some minutes in the next three games, especially with Marcus Rashford set to miss out with injury.

Villa themselves will simply be hoping for the striker to come back in full fitness. Losing Watkins now, while they already have Jack Grealish out, would be a nightmare scenario for the Villa boss, Dean Smith.

TBR View: Watkins will keep getting better, Sinclair is right

Few signings have had an impact on a team this season quite like Watkins has. He’s transformed the way Villa play and made them an entirely different team this term.

Sinclair says Watkins will only get better and he’s right. More goals are bound to come and as long as he keeps his head down, then there’s no reason why he can’t be an England regular either.
