‘A much better footballer’…Paul Scholes says Manchester City star is ahead of £11m Chelsea legend

Phil Foden scored his 18th goal of the season for Man City today as they beat Man United and Paul Scholes was very impressed again.

Foden has become one of the main men for City in recent seasons and backed up his status today with a game-winning contribution against their bitter rivals.

For Foden, who is hoping to play a big role for England this summer, it’s now about continuing to improve and add more goals and assists to his game, much like top PL legends like Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

And at just 23, Paul Scholes believes that Foden is not only a better footballer than Lampard, but he’s approaching the influence levels Lampard had too.

“He’s starting to…look, Phil Foden is a better footballer than Frank Lampard but Lampard scored goals and won leagues for his club, from midfield. You expect strikers to score goals, you expect the numbers from Haaland or from Michael (Owen) when the team is playing well. But from a midfield point of view you’ve really got to take the game by the neck and say ‘right, I’m going to get us back into this, I’m going to win us this game’. I think Frank Lampard was like that and I think Phil Foden is starting to do that goals wise. Look, Phil’s a much better footballer than Frank but Frank won leagues for his team because of his contribution from midfield in big games especially, and I think we’re seeing the same thing now from Phil Foden, definitely,” Scholes said for Premier League Productions.

Phil Foden better than Frank Lampard

Look, this is a hard comparison to make but Scholes does a good job here of trying to break it down.

Lampard did, as Scholes says, influence games massively with his goals and you don’t score more than 200 for Chelsea if you aren’t a top player. Chelsea paid just £11m for Lampard in 2001 and when you look at value for money, few are better in the history of the league.

Foden, as Scholes also says, is now getting to those levels with goals and with the natural talent already there, the sky really is the limit for the England man.

He was quite brilliant today and if he can continue like he is doing, City are going to take some stopping across all fronts this season.
