'A lot to offer': Howe says Newcastle have an 'incredible athlete' in their squad, he's noticed in pre-season
Lewis made just four Premier League starts last season, and was left out of the 25-man named squad after the January transfer window.
There have been more new faces in during pre-season, but it seems that Lewis has caught the eye and could be set for more gametime this time around.
Howe told the Shields Gazette how impressed he has been with Lewis, during a summer in which he has bought Matt Targett, making his loan deal permanent.
Newcastle boss Howe praises Lewis
“Jamal, we hope, can stay fit and show us what he’s capable of,” said Howe.
“I believe in him as a player, but he’s just had really bad luck. He’s got a lot to offer physically, we’ve certainly seen that in pre-season – an incredible athlete.
“He needs consistency of training at the moment – and hopefully he can get that. Fede Fernandez and Lewis, they’re working their way back to fitness.”
Lewis had a promising reputation before he moved to Newcastle, but has lost his way somewhat over the past year or so.
He should relish the battle with Targett to be Howe’s starting left-back, and the Toon boss will want that competition for places across the pitch next season.
It looks like he could be set for a revival, but the proof will be in the pudding when the serious stuff starts next weekend.
