A look at the progress of Chelsea’s key loan stars

After a 13 million pound move to Chelsea from QPR on deadline day of 2014, it would be an understatement to say that Remy’s career at Chelsea has been troubled. A multitude of injuries and the form of Diego Costa has kept the French striker from nailing down a starting position. Matters were made even worse after the blues signing of Michy Batshuayi. Directly after this signing, Remy was loaned to Palace so that he could find his form. Unfortunately, Remy picked up a major calf injury that has kept him from making a single appearance for Palace. Remy is also only a few days away from being on the wrong side of 30, so his pace-oriented game appears to be in its twilight.

Victorien Angban at Granada

Ivorian holding midfielder, Victorien Angban, is one of the 37 to have never spent a full season at his parent club. He was signed in January of last year and was promptly sent out on loan to Belgian side Sint-Truidense for the next season and a half. While he excelled greatly for Truidense, Angban was never in contention for the Chelsea first team at any point. This year it was decided that he would continue his development at La Liga strugglers Granada. However, so far this season, he has not been able to replicate the form he had while in Belgium. He has only made five league appearances for the team who sit bottom of the Spanish top flight, and doesn’t look like his place on the bench will be changing anytime soon. While he is only 20, and a full Ivory Coast international, there is very little hope for his first team future at Chelsea.

Matej Delac at Royal Excel Mouscron

While Delac has become the first choice keeper at Mouscron, it certainly hasn’t been because of his performances. He has let in 27 goals in only 14 league games (including seven against Anderlecht) and at 24 years of age, he isn’t exactly one for the future. He has already been on nine loan spells since being bought in 2010, and it doesn’t appear that he will return to Chelsea on a permanent basis anytime soon. And, because this is the last year on his Blues contract, it would be in the best interests of Delac’s career to let it run out and move his career forward.

Wallace at Gremio

Right-back Wallace is another former Brazilian starlet who has been effectively ruined by Chelsea’s loan system (Lucas Piazon, Nathan, Kenedy). While Wallace did have a strong time at Vitesse, he only made seven appearances while on loan at Carpi last season, and only made five appearances in a full Brazilian league campaign. Wallace’s chances for a place in the Chelsea first team have been even further diminished by the emergence of Victor Moses as an impressive option for Antonio Conte’s right wing-back role.
