A look at Son Heung-min’s two-goal display for Tottenham against Watford

Tottenham continue to maintain pressure on league leaders Chelsea after their convincing victory 4-0 over Watford at White Hart Lane. They didn’t have Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Victor Wanyama or Harry Kane in the starting eleven, but they still managed to deliver an excellent performance and put on a show for their supporters.

Spurs have put together a very talented squad with plenty of potential to grow as a team and they should be a serious title contender in years to come.

The player to stand out on Saturday was Son Heung-min and the South Korean has made major strides during recent weeks. The 24-year-old has stepped up in the absence of Harry Kane and he has now scored seven goals in his last five matches for Tottenham across all competitions.

On Saturday afternoon, he managed to bag a brace, but he could have scored a hat-trick on another day. He missed a great chance late on before having another effort that smashed the bar. That said, the game was already won at that stage and he will be forgiven for not finding the net again.

His first goal displayed his incredible goal-scoring instincts as he sensed there was a chance and got a shot away early, giving the Watford goalkeeper no chance. It was an excellent effort from range and showed the confidence he has at the moment. His second was a great finish and it was surprising that he didn’t take either of the two late chances that came his way.

Throughout the match, he attempted six shots and that underlines how he is very good at getting into dangerous positions. He has always contributed important goals since joining Spurs, but he is now scoring with more consistency and it will be difficult to keep him out of the team.

In addition to his impact in front of goal, Son was influential in possession and he made the assist for Dele Alli’s goal. Although that goal was more about the strike from Alli rather than the pass from the South Korean, he will take it and he now moves on to four assists for the campaign. Throughout the match, he completed 82% of his passes.

The one part of his game that he needs to improve is his decision making, as he can sometimes be selfish in front of goal. He can be forgiven for that yesterday afternoon, but it must improve over the next 12 months as he continues his development.

It was interesting to note that the 24-year-old failed to complete one dribble during the match as this is usually a strong part of his game. Pochettino demands that his players work hard out of possession and Son certainly did that against Watford. He is very good at pressing and he completed one tackle during the match. It wasn’t the most impressive defensive performance, but he played his part and he can be pleased with all aspects of his display on Saturday.

The next aim for the South Korean is to establish himself as a first-team regular at White Hart Lane. His main problem is that Tottenham look more balanced in a 3-4-2-1 formation and he struggles to get into the side if they choose that system.

They have Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane to play the three advanced positions, while the wide players are wing backs, a position that doesn’t suit Son.However, if they continue to line up in a 4-2-3-1, he is perfect for the left wing role as an inside forward, as he can drift inside and take up goal-scoring positions.

The next few weeks could define Spurs’ season and Son has a huge role to play in that. He is un-droppable right now.
