A look at Roberto Firmino’s magnificent display for Liverpool against Arsenal

It’s not very often that a striker can score one goal and set another up and not even be in contention for the man of the match award, but that is testament to the superb all round display from Liverpool’s attacking players at Anfield as they overcame their rivals for fourth place, Arsenal.

That said, Roberto Firmino’s display was one of his best of the season and demands recognition as he was crucial to the side’s route to victory as he shone in the first half in particular.

The ex-Hoffenheim man’s run for the first goal was timed to perfection, leaving the Arsenal defence looking lost as they span to see him get on the end of Sadio Mane’s cross when Philippe Coutinho allowed the ball to run through his legs. With pressure on him, Firmino coolly took a touch before prodding the ball home past Petr Cech in goal.

Then, the scorer turned provider as he returned the favour and played in Sadio Mane to score a vital second goal before half time. The Brazilian had the ball at his feet surrounded by defenders in yellow but his vision was extraordinary to pick out Mane in space on the corner of the box, with the Senegal international not hesitating to smash the ball into the top corner.

The Brazilian had less of an impact in the second half, with the introduction of Alexis Sanchez creating a need for more defensive support and meaning that Firmino had less licence and freedom to roam in attack, but he still played a vital role, with his pressing game crucial as Jurgen Klopp encouraged his side to defend from the front against the London club.

Firmino has been one of those players to have been criticised for his inconsistent form of late, but performances like this one deserve recognition as they will be crucial if the Reds are to secure a top four finish and compete in the Champions League next season.
