When Bournemouth were preparing for their clash against the league leaders, it’s likely that they were expecting the biggest threat to come down Chelsea’s left wing. It’s unlikely, however, that they were expecting Marcos Alonso to cause them just as many problems as Eden Hazard.
Whilst the Belgian was also in incredible form, finding the back of the net for the Blues’ second goal with a magnificent run giving him acres of space to beat Artur Boruc and roll the ball home, Alonso too was on fire.
His best moment came in the 68th minute, with the Cherries continuing to pose more and more of a threat on the counter-attack against Antonio Conte’s side after Josh King halved the deficit on the stroke of half-time. A rather unexpected candidate to take a free-kick from 25 yards, the wing-back stepped up to curl the ball into the top corner of the net.
That may have been the highlight, but the former Bolton Wanderers man deserves praise for his all round performance at the Vitality Stadium. With four dangerous crosses all whizzed into the box, he could easily have picked up one or more assists had Diego Costa have put his shooting boots on on Saturday afternoon.
Also providing a crucial aerial presence in the final third as the tallest of any of Chelsea’s midfield and attack, he won more aerial battles than any other offensive player for his side, showing that he was not afraid to get stuck in with some of the dirty work when he wasn’t bombing down the wing.
Whilst many have prioritised the wing-back positions for upgrades in the summer transfer window, Alonso is in the form of his life at present and is staking a claim to be first choice with his superb interlinking play with Eden Hazard on the left flank proving devastating.
