'A long way to go': Paul Merson predicts result of Tottenham v Wolves clash

Tottenham Hotspur are in Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime as they host Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Spurs set the pace in the first matchday of the season with a 4-1 win over Southampton.

Antonio Conte’s charges then played out a 2-2 draw away at Chelsea, Harry Kane scoring an injury-time equaliser.

Meanwhile, Wolves lost their opener at Leeds United before playing out a 0-0 draw with Fulham at Molineux.

Tottenham sit fourth in the Premier League table after two games, while Wolves are 14th in the standings.

Paul Merson, writing on Sportskeeda, believes Spurs have a “long way to go” to be considered a top-level team.

He felt that Tottenham’s draw with Chelsea was a case of “papering over the cracks”.

Nonetheless, he feels Spurs will manage a 2-1 win against Wolves at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“A lot of people have said Tottenham Hotspur will be a different team this season, but I believe they still have a long way to go,” wrote Merson.

“They were lucky against Chelsea as Harry Kane’s late equaliser meant the result papered over the cracks as they were outplayed for large parts of the game.

“That said, I still think they’ll beat Wolves, but it won’t be a straightforward result based on what I saw from Spurs last weekend.

“With Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski, they’ve got enough individual brilliance up front to unlock Wolves’ backline, so I’m going for a 2-1 Tottenham win.”

Tottenham v Wolves team news

As per the official Tottenham website, Conte will not risk Cristian Romero on Saturday after he picked up an injury against Chelsea.

However, Clement Lenglet returned to the fold and trained this week, so he is available for the north Londoners.

Meanwhile, Wolves could give a debut to record signing Matheus Nunes following his move from Sporting Lisbon.

Joao Moutinho returned to training this week and could make his first appearance of the season in old gold.
