Paul Merson reckons that Timo Werner would’ve been a good signing for Chelsea this month if it weren’t for his history at Stamford Bridge.
The German has, of course, joined Tottenham on loan with a £15m option to buy, but Merson reckons that Chelsea need someone in his mould.
Merson says that as strange as it is to say, he thinks that Werner would’ve been a good signing for Chelsea, claiming that they absolutely need a goalscorer at this moment in time.

Werner could’ve been perfect for Chelsea
Merson shared his verdict on the striker in his column for Sportskeeda.
“This is probably a funny thing to say, but if Timo Werner didn’t previously play for Chelsea, I think snapping him up on loan would’ve been something the club would have considered in January. Much like Arsenal, they need a bonafide goalscorer and I wouldn’t be surprised if they manage to sign someone this month,” Merson wrote.
Need better
Regardless of Werner’s history at Chelsea, we still think that the Blues need someone better than Werner if they are to kick on to the next level.
With all due respect, the German hasn’t shown great goalscoring form for quite some time now.
He scored just nine goals last season and only two so far this term. That’s not exactly the type of form that Chelsea are looking for.
The Blues need someone who is truly clinical to lead their line. After all, they already have enough misfiring but hardworking strikers in their team.
Tottenham can get away with signing someone like Werner because he’s not going to be their sole supplier of goals and he’s just a stop-gap while Heung-Min Son is away at the Asian Cup.
Chelsea need someone who has been scoring on a regular basis in recent times, and someone in Werner’s mould wouldn’t be of much use to Mauricio Pochettino’s side right now.
