Granit Xhaka was one of Arsenal’s best players last season, but after a fantastic campaign, he was sold to Bayer Leverkusen.
The German club signed Xhaka for £21m this summer, and that’s proven to be one of the signings of the season as Xabi Alonso’s side have ascended to the top of the Bundesliga.
Arsenal may well be regretting letting Xhaka go, but speaking on The Stand with Eamon Dunphy, John Giles has shared a different viewpoint on this situation.
Indeed, according to Giles, the decision to get rid of Xhaka was a masterstroke, claiming that the Swiss midfielder caused all sorts of trouble at Arsenal over the years.

Selling Granit Xhaka was the right call
Giles shared his verdict on this situation.
“It was good of Arteta to get rid of him because of all the trouble he caused at Arsenal, if he’s gone elsewhere and calmed down good for him, but Arteta getting rid of him was a big plus for Arsenal,” Giles said.
Harsh
We can’t help but feel that this is a very harsh viewpoint.
On one hand, yes, Xhaka did have his controversies at Arsenal, but at the same time, that was a long time ago and he has calmed down a lot recently.
Xhaka was nothing but a consummate professional during his last season at the club, and while he has shown in the past that he can go off like a ticking timebomb at any moment, we really do think he seemed to have turned a corner.
Despite what Giles says, we find it hard to believe that Xhaka was sold because of the trouble he’d caused. After all, most of that drama is ancient history by this point.
