A big new contract, but has Liverpool’s Sadio Mane been slept on by neutrals?

Liverpool winger Sadio Mane has put pen to paper on a new deal at Anfield.

The Senegal international has committed until 2023 after weeks of talk.

Mane’s new deal has put fans at ease, after speculation had linked the player with moves to Barcelona and Real Madrid.

It’s a big coup, and he has followed in the footsteps of fellow attackers Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in committing to the club.

Reds supporters adore him, and will feel that this new deal is thoroughly deserved.

He’s been a brilliant signing for Liverpool since joining in 2016 from Southampton, but have fans actually underrated him?

Mane has previously been overshadowed

Over the past two-and-a-bit years, Mane has definitely been overshadowed at Liverpool.

At the time of his arrival, Philippe Coutinho was the main man at Anfield.

The Brazilian was often imperious for the Reds, using flair and trickery to draw all of the attention. His eye for the spectacular often stole the headlines.

Last season Mane again faded into the background somewhat.

Salah’s incredible campaign drew the focus of everyone, and those that weren’t talking about the Egyptian were raving over Firmino, who was just so productive in attack.

The fact is, Mane has been just as brilliant for the Reds but does not always get the recognition – especially from neutrals – due to the profile of other individuals.

He’s scored 29 goals in the Premier League, and made 15 assists. He was also scintillating in last season’s Champions League, scoring ten times.

With Coutinho sold, and Firmino and Salah not quite at their respective bests so far in 2018/19, perhaps Mane’s time to emerge from the shadows has finally arrived.
