Arsenal legend Ian Wright has now been discussing an excellent individual performance against Newcastle United yesterday.

Mikel Arteta’s side blew Newcastle away in the first half, dispelling any worry of a European hangover.

Arsenal didn’t muster a shot on target in Portugal, and yet they were at their attacking and pressing best in North London last night.

Martin Odegaard led the press so brilliantly, complimented by the pace and energy of both Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

Kai Havertz was very intelligent with his work in the middle too, demonstrating he’s more than capable of being Arteta’s number nine.

And whilst Jorginho deservedly won the player of the match award for his excellent work in the midfield, Ian Wright was discussing another name on the BBC’s Match of the Day.

Wright absolutely loved Arsenal’s reaction against Newcastle yesterday, and singled out Saka for praise in particular.

Saka did actually match a record of Wright’s by scoring again yesterday, and the pundit was delighted for him.

The Arsenal icon was speaking to Gary Lineker when reviewing Saka’s goal which made it three nil, and was informed that his record had now been matched.

Wright initially said: “Now with Saka, you do not want to let him come back inside, he’s going to go outside, he comes back in, and then bang.

“Fantastic, that’s a beautiful sight, that.”

Lineker replied: “I don’t know if you know this, but Saka becomes the first Englishmen to score in five successive Premier League games for Arsenal since Ian Wright OBE.”

Wright: “Nice one Saka, like he says, all he wants to do is carry on doing his stuff, he’s the greatest man, he’s the star, he’s the starboy.”

Of course, Saka’s performance was just the tip of the iceberg for Arsenal against Newcastle, there was so much to love about the display.

Arteta’s team provided sufficient reason to be confident heading into the second leg against Porto in a couple of weeks time, buoyed by their goalscoring power on home soil right now.

That being said, it was a midfield performance which blew Kai Havertz away last night
