'9/10', 'his best performance of pre-season': Media wowed by £13m Newcastle man's display v Atalanta
Newcastle United got their double-header weekend underway with a solid 1-0 victory over Atalanta at St James’ Park.
The Magpies grabbed the only goal of the game in the 39th minute.
Chris Wood converted from the spot after Elliot Anderson was hauled down in the box.
Newcastle continued to threaten thereafter, with Anderson providing more positive moments.
The game petered out somewhat in the latter stages, but Newcastle were rarely threatened at the back.
While Anderson was thoroughly impressive for Eddie Howe’s side, Dan Burn also earned rave reviews for his display.
“Done a brilliant job marking Zapata – who has scored over 100 goals in Serie A – by sticking to him like glue,” wrote Lee Ryder.
“Barely let the Colombia international out of his sight all evening.”
Meanwhile, the Shields Gazette gave Burn 8/10 and wrote: “Dealt very well with Duvan Zapata and restricted the Colombian to half-chances.
“Coped very well physically and reignited his partnership with Fabian Schar.”
Newcastle World also opted for 8/10, writing: “His best performance of pre-season by far.
“Dominant in the air and read the game very well.”
And the Northern Echo went with 7/10, writing: “Manfully stood up to battles with Zapata who was a threat all evening and comfortably played out from the back.”
Newcastle take on Athletic Bilbao at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
