89 touches, five tackles: £34m Arsenal-linked star steals the show on international stage
RB Leipzig star and reported Arsenal target Tyler Adams captained the United States of America to a fantastic win over Mexico in their World Cup qualifiers.
The Athletic revealed back in the summer that the versatile American is one of the players Mikel Arteta really likes. German outlet SportBILD, as relayed by The Metro, revealed earlier this week that the Gunners are still interested in his services.
Adams has a £34 million release clause included in his contract. The report claims that he is under consideration ahead of the January transfer window, and his performance against Mexico in the early hours of Saturday morning shows exactly why.
Here’s a look at his stats from the game at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Arsenal target Tyler Adams stats vs Mexico
Adams, who is naturally a right-back, started in central midfield yesterday, a position where he has played many times for club and country in the past. He was absolutely incredible against the Mexicans.
In his 90 minutes on the pitch, the American had 89 touches of the ball and maintained a decent 80 per cent passing accuracy. He attempted five long balls, completed 100 per cent of his dribbles and registered two key passes, which is excellent for a defensive midfielder. (SofaScore)
Defensively, Adams was outstanding. He made five tackles, four interceptions, one clearance and won nine of his 11 attempted ground duels – a fantastic return for someone who is still only 22. (SofaScore)
Arsenal desperately needed a right-back in the summer after Hector Bellerin joined Real Betis. It looked like they’d miss out, but on the final day of the transfer window, Edu and Arteta managed to bring in Takehiro Tomiyasu.
The Japan international has been brilliant and he’ll be Arsenal’s undisputed first-choice right-back for a long time. However, the Gunners are short of options in the middle of the park, and that’s where they could do with a player like Adams.
The 22-year-old checks all the boxes Arteta usually looks for in a player. He’s good on the ball, is versatile, has a fantastic work ethic and is a real leader despite being so young.
That makes him a perfect option for Arsenal in January or in the summer. His £34 million release clause makes him very affordable too and if the Gunners can get him, he could become a mainstay for the better part of the next decade.
