£8 million signing is proving to be an under-the-radar Pochettino masterstroke

Tottenham Hotspur star Juan Foyth is quietly proving himself to be of the club’s shrewdest signings for some time.

The Argentine was brought on as an 80th-minute substitute against Ajax during the Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday, and was highly positive during his cameo at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The £8 million signing from Estudiantes (BBC Sport) replaced Kieran Trippier who once again struggled for Spurs.

Upon entering the game, Foyth took it upon himself to try and contribute as a makeshift right-back and to his credit he actually did very well.

Foyth is primarily a centre-half, but showed an admirable willingness to try and drag his team back level on the night.

Despite not having a great deal of time, Foyth was one of the few Tottenham players to stand out, and it hasn’t been the first time this season.

TBR’s view

Foyth has made 16 appearances for the club this term but he has impressed in most of the matches.

On WhoScored, he has achieved an average rating of 7.09 so far which is actually higher than that of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez.

Few really took much notice when Mauricio Pochettino plucked him from the obscurity of the Argentinian top-flight, but Foyth appears to be a real coup for such a modest outlay.

With Toby Alderweireld likely to depart this summer due to a £25 million release clause in his contract, and the struggling Kieran Trippier having recently been linked away, 2019/20 could Foyth’s time to truly shine
