£8.5m Steven Gerrard signing now expected to leave Aston Villa before the deadline

Aston Villa defender Callum Chambers is expected to move away from the club before tonight’s deadline passes, according to reports.

Chambers has struggled at Villa ever since being signed by Steven Gerrard in an £8.5m deal from Arsenal back in 2019.

The defender is nowhere near the first-team picture under Unai Emery at the moment and doesn’t look like being part of his plans anytime soon either.

And now, according to The Athletic, Chambers will be allowed to leave before tonight’s deadline, with a number of Championship clubs all keen on the former Gunners.

Callum Chambers to leave Aston Villa

It’s a bit of a shame for Callum Chambers in that his career has never quite got going the way many imagined it to.

Despite being capped three times by England and threatening to really kick on at one point, Chambers seems to have gone backwards due to different issues. Injuries haven’t helped him, and now a move away from Villa is a chance to rebuild again.

A move to a Championship club is not the end of the world for Chambers though. There are some good sides down there now and if he goes to the right club, he might end up back in the Premier League anyway.

For Villa, it’s just about clearing the decks really and moving players on who aren’t going to play a part.

Unai Emery has something building at the club at the moment and there’s no room for passengers as he looks to guide Villa into the top four.
