£7m-rated goalkeeper has got to choose Aston Villa over Liverpool

Tom Heaton has the choice of both Liverpool and Aston Villa during the latter weeks of the summer window, as the Burnley goalkeeper looks set to leave Turf Moor – but who should he pick?

The Sun claim Villa made a £7million bid for the 33-year-old Burnley goalkeeper who could leave the Clarets this summer, with Sean Dyche’s side boasting three England internationals between the sticks.

Joe Hart is still considered in with a shout of first-team football, while Nick Pope is the youngest of the three and is likely to be kept. It means Heaton may be forced out of the club, despite being club captain.

The Daily Mail claim Liverpool want Heaton as they continue to struggle for options between the sticks. Alisson is enjoying an extended break after winning the Copa America, and it has seen Andy Lonergan join the club’s US tour.

Simon Mignolet made a dismal error in Liverpool’s 2-2 pre-season draw against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday night, allowing Bruno Fernandez’ shot to bounce off of him into the net.

Heaton has a big decision. He can remain at Burnley, but the chances are that Dyche may opt to start with either Hart or Pope. If he decides to leave, he must choose between Villa or Liverpool.

At Liverpool, the former Manchester United goalkeeper would only be a back-up stopper to Alisson, and he may get a chance in the cups. Alisson would surely be given preference in the league and the Champions League.

But at Villa, Heaton would be without doubt Villa’s first-choice goalkeeper. He is head and shoulders above Jed Steer, Lovre Kalinic and Orjan Nyland. Heaton must choose a move to Villa, over Liverpool.
