£7m Lovre Kalinic is the final piece of Aston Villa's promotion-chasing jigsaw
Aston Villa are close to completing the signing of Lovre Kalinic, according to The Telegraph.
Gent goalkeeper Kalinic is expected to have a medical at Aston Villa soon ahead of a £7m switch.
Although this is a sizeable outlay for any Championship side, it is an immediate fix that needs to be made in January.
Kalinic would shore things up between the sticks and this could be the difference between promotion and staying down.
Steve Bruce moved to bring in two new goalkeepers this summer to replace Sam Johnstone.
But Andre Moreira has not had a look in and Orjan Nyland has made too many errors to trust for the run-in.
Aston Villa need a new goalkeeper and new manager Dean Smith is prioritising this position in January.
Kalinic is an exciting option for the Villans and for £7m, he could be their ticket to the Premier League.
The Croatia international recently played against England in the UEFA Nations League and is his country’s number one option in goal since Danijel Subasic retired.
Having spent two years in Belgium with Gent, the 28-year-old is now set to move on and challenge himself in England.
Kalinic is at the right age to be Aston Villa’s number one for several years and he is an immediate upgrade on Nyland.
This could be the transfer move that earns Aston Villa promotion back to the Premier League.
