The financial muscle of the new Newcastle United is now known to every player in Europe, including Belgian side Club Brugge’s Hans Vanaken.
The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League on multiple occasions in the past. He was very close to joining West Ham United last year, but he revealed in an interview that he rejected the Irons. (Mirror)
Now entering the final few years of his career, Vanaken has to think about his last big move. His ambitions, just like almost every other player, are to win trophies and to compete at the highest level.
However, he has revealed what he will do if cash-rich Newcastle United make him a big financial offer.
Hans Vanaken: What I will do if Newcastle offer me a big contract
The 6ft 5in Belgian, who has already scored three times in the Champions League this season, said on the HLN Sportcast podcast, as translated by Voetbal Belgie: “I still have plenty of challenges for myself here (at Club Brugge).
“I’m in a team that plays for the trophies and enters the Champions League. That really appeals to me. I will never just exchange this for a team where I may have to play to avoid relegation.”
Asked what he’ll do if Newcastle United offer him a big-money contract, Vanaken said: “If such an offer comes on the table, I would have to think about it carefully first. But, I am now 29 years old and such amounts are over the top.”

TBR View:
It really is an exciting time for Newcastle United fans. Yes, they are struggling in the league at the moment, and yes, relegation is still a very real possibility considering how things are.
However, they now have the financial muscle to bring in top-quality players. They will definitely not be able to attract the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe and Haaland, but there are plenty of others who would say yes to a big contract.
Vanaken is one of them, but he’s unlikely to be a target. He is a very good midfielder, but he’ll turn 30 in the summer and that is simply not the profile of players that Newcastle should be looking at under their new regime.
