Arsenal’s search for a new number nine may now finally be heading towards a conclusion.
Arsenal have been looking for a new striker for absolutely ages at this point, and now they seem to have identified a top target.
Alexander Isak was Arsenal’s top target at one point, while Benjamin Sesko was strongly linked to Arsenal earlier this summer.
However, according to Julien Laurens, speaking on ESPN, Viktor Gyokeres is now the strong favourite to be Arsenal’s new striker, claiming that this move is getting closer and closer to being done.
Arsenal bid £56m for Gyokeres recently, and now a move appears to be getting closer to being done.

Viktor Gyokeres getting closer to joining Arsenal
Laurens spoke about Gyokeres’ next destination and where he will end up.
The journalist says that it looks like Gyokeres is getting closer and closer to signing for Arsenal, and that he’s now the strong favourite to become the north London club’s new number nine.
“What about Viktor Gyokeres?” Laurens was asked.
“Well, it’s not very bold to be fair to say that he will go to Arsenal. But I think this one seems to be getting closer and closer,” Laurens said.
“We talked a lot about who would you go for between Sesko and Gyokeres, I think even people at the club were a bit in between, some were more in the Sesko camp, some were more in the Gyokeres camp. It seems that Gyokeres now is the strong favourite to go to Arsenal.”
Mikel Arteta’s past signings from Portuguese League
Viktor Gyokeres could be headed to the Emirates, but Mikel Arteta may want to tread carefully here.
Indeed, as good as Gyokeres has looked for Sporting in recent years, the reality is that the Portuguese League hasn’t been the happiest hunting ground for Arsenal, particularly in the Mikel Arteta era.
| Mikel Arteta’s past signings from Portuguese League | Fee |
| Nuno Tavares | £8m |
| Fabio Vieira | £34m |
Arteta has made two signings from Portugal in the past – Nuno Tavares and Fabio Vieira, and neither of those signings has particularly worked out.
Vieira is likely to leave Arsenal this summer, while Tavares has already departed the club to join Lazio after Tavares had a difficult spell at the Emirates.
Signings from Portugal have rarely fared well at Arsenal, and that is something they may want to keep in mind as they look to sew up the Gyokeres deal.
