Earlier in the week, Liverpool were linked with a move for Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski. It came after something of an injury crisis emerged at Liverpool. Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez were all out injured, leaving Virgil van Dijk without a partner.
Reports suggested that Liverpool were hoping to take Tarkowski on loan with a view to buy. The Sun, however, suggested Burnely would only sell the England international for £50 million.
Sean Dyche has now discussed the rumours, describing it as a ‘phantom’ story. However, if Liverpool are keen, then Tarkowski’s performance yesterday would not have helped the Turf Moor side.
The 26-year-old was in sensational form for Burnley yesterday as they defeated Fulham 2-1 in a crunch relegation battle.
Tarkowski, who has struggled for his best form this season, has recently found his best performances again and, against Fulham, it was no different.
He put in a number of important challenges, but not least a goal-line clearance that ensured all three points for Dyche’s men.
Was it a £50 million performance? Maybe not. With Matip now fit and Fabinho looking capable at the heart of defence Liverpool should also now cope at the back. But it certainly highlighted just why Liverpool might be ready to express an interest in the future.
