With Newcastle United on the verge of getting new owners, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive regarding potential targets for the Magpies.

Newcastle are in the final stages of a takeover bid, with the club now very close to being bought off Mike Ashley, as was initially reported by talkSPORT last Wednesday.

PCP Capital Partners, headed by Amanda Staveley, have brokered the £300million deal which is being backed by the Saudi Arabian royal family’s Public Investment Fund.

According to Sky Sports, the Saudi-backed consortium have now paid a deposit and exchanged contracts – which are legally binding – with Ashley, so the only aspect of the deal left to be completed is the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test.

Newcastle’s prospective new owners are expected to have major ambitions upon arriving at St. James’ Park, and one player linked with the Magpies is Barcelona and Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal.

Italian website ITA Sport Press have claimed that the 32-year-old is a target for Newcastle’s potential new owners.

The former Bayern Munich star – who has 115 caps for his nation – is said to be open to a move to Newcastle if Massimiliano Allegri replaces Steve Bruce as manager.

Vidal has received huge praise from Lionel Messi in the past, the Argentine telling Metro after the 1-0 Champions League win over Inter last October: “Arturo gives you so much.

“He is a player who, when he enters, catches, recovers, arrives, plays. He is a very important player for us and it is good that he had these minutes today, he felt important because he is a very important player for the team.”

But what do Barcelona fans make of the speculation? Here is some of the reaction on social media:
