Alan Shearer once labelled West Ham ace Issa Diop as an ‘immense’ defender amid reports over a transfer to AC Milan.

The Irons beat Spurs 1-0 thanks to a Michail Antonio goal with the Frenchman starring for Maunel Pellegrini’s side.

Speaking on Match of the Day (28/04/2019), the pundit lauded the centre-half after his performance versus Tottenham.

Diop has been linked with a move to the Italian giants with reports claiming the club are in talks with his representatives.

It is thought the club could make a bid for the defender even if Alessio Romagnoli stays at the club.

The club captain has been linked with a move away from the San Siro with reports claiming Tottenham are one of three options for him.

When talking about the player, Shearer said: “A towering display. Everything he did was almost perfect. Reading of the game, tackling, pace, getting in front of forwards as he did constantly all afternoon. The awareness of what’s going on in and around him. He was immense…”

TBR View: West Ham would be silly to let Diop complete a transfer to AC Milan

Amid reports of a transfer to AC Milan, West Ham would be silly to let Diop leave the club.

His age, profile and quality makes him an invaluable asset to David Moyes’ side. Despite his struggles last season, the centre-back can still offer plenty to the Hammers.

The club’s qualification for the Europa League also leaves them needing to increase their squad numbers.

Selling Diop would mean the club will be forced into scouring the market for a replacement defender.

And with the high level of quality the France youth international possesses, that could be extremely difficult.

This transfer window is a horrible balancing act for Moyes and his team. They need to add quality, however, ridding the squad of a player like Diop would be a poor move.
