A look on social media following Leeds United’s defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday would have told you that many fans felt that the Whites had produced one of their worst performances of the season against Dean Smith’s side.
Leeds were certainly poor against the Villans. They conceded a sloppy goal after five minutes. And in truth, they rarely looked like finding an equaliser. Emi Martinez would have been forgiven for expecting a much busier afternoon.
It was not a day in which a number of Leeds players were wrestling the man of the match trophy off each other.
In fact, it is probably fair to say that only a handful of players could be content with their contributions.
And Luke Ayling was arguably one of those who did do well.
As shown by Whoscored.com, he made 48 accurate passes during the game. Only Mateusz Klich and the two Leeds centre-backs managed more.
Meanwhile, he did win more tackles than anyone else, with five. His tally of four aerial duels won was only bettered by Liam Cooper and Tyrone Mings. And no Leeds player made more interceptions than the 29-year-old.
Ayling never shied away from getting on the ball as Leeds searched for a moment of quality either.
So while he may want to move on from the game as quickly as the rest of the squad, there is perhaps reason to suggest that he is someone who can hold his head up high.
