TBR View: Christophe Galtier could be perfect Mikel Arteta replacement after links with Barcelona
Reports over the last few days or so since Arsenal’s season ended have claimed that Mikel Arteta is still a target for Barcelona meaning free agent Christophe Galtier could prove to be a perfect replacement for the Spaniard.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Joan Laporte is considering whether to sack Ronald Koeman or not and has drawn up a list of potential replacements including the Spaniard.
The move proves a fairly confusing one for those associated with Arsenal.
On the one hand, Arteta is at the start of what is deemed a long-term project and has shown signs he can take the club to the next level after his FA Cup victory.
However, on the flip side, a number of issues have reared its ugly head in the last few months, namely his loyalty in certain players, inability to break down defences and poor in-game management ability.
With all that under consideration, recent comments from Galtier may provide the Gunners with some hope over a quick replacement for the former Manchester City assistant.
Speaking after Lille’s title win last Sunday, he announced that he’d be leaving the newly-crowned Ligue 1 champions for a new challenge.
He’s been linked with the vacant manager’s role at Nice, however, most people would find it hard to turn down the chance to manage England’s third-most successful club.
Galtier, who has been labelled as France’s ‘most sought-after coach’, has just come off a sensational achievement as he helped Les Dogues lift their first league title in a decade.
However, it was his management style that caught the eye more than anything.
Whilst his side didn’t score nearly as many as Paris Saint Germain, the defensive side of their game was strong, conceding just 23 goals in 38 league games.
He also managed the victory with a number of aged players in his starting XI, including 36-year-old Jose Fonte and 35-year-old Burak Yilmaz.
At the start of the season, not many would’ve tipped the side to go on to win the division, especially after the sale of their young defender Gabriel Magalhaes. But, his ability to manage with what he’s got is stunning and would suit a Gunners side, who are in need of a squad overhaul.
Galtier has proven to be the perfect replacement should Arteta depart the Emirates Stadium earlier than first thought.
