Last summer there was plenty of excitement surrounding Everton’s young players. It came after the likes of Jonjoe Kenny, Callum Connolly, Kieran Dowell and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all starred as England won the under-20 World Cup.

Calvert-Lewin might have been the pick of the bunch. He scored the winning goal in the final v Venezuela as England’s youngsters captured a nation.

However, there is certainly a school of thought that ‘DCL’ is being pushed too soon for Everton.

The 21-year-old, who scored eight goals in 44 appearances last season, has an impressive record so far this term. Three goals in six games is certainly worthy of praise.

However, against Arsenal at the weekend and in previous fixtures, the youngster has simply looked a little jaded.

One thing he does not seem sure of is his best position? Is he a winger? Forward? Central striker? It certainly seems muddled at present.

Everton fans got on his back after the Arsenal display, as he proved wasteful in attack and ineffective going backward.

It could be that, come January, injuries permitting, Everton should consider finding a perfect Championship club for him to continue his development with as part of a loan deal.

Right now, they risk burning out a young talent who, for whatever reason, is simply not firing.
