£43.7m bid and Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Maxi Gomez is straightforward

Tottenham Hotspur have today been linked with a move for Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez. El Pais has reported that both Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund are keen on the Celta Vigo striker, who has been in fine form in La Liga.

Tottenham’s interest certainly makes sense. Spurs still lack a decent covering striker for Harry Kane. The current option, Fernando Llorente, also looks certain to leave the club in the summer.

Tottenham, who failed to sign a single player in the summer, have of course been bound somewhat by their troubles over the new stadium build.

But at least with Gomez, the facts are simple.

As reported by El Desmarque in the summer, Celta Vigo’s Uruguayan striker has a €50 million (£43.7 million) release clause in his current deal.

If Tottenham match that price tag, then Celta Vigo have to accept and they are free to discuss terms.

Of course, Daniel Levy has a fierce reputation for tough negotiation. That fee will seem steep to the Tottenham chairman.

No doubt there is probably a price below the clause that the Galicians will consider.

However, Tottenham can simplify the process with a £43.7m bid and immediately discuss terms with the player himself.

Should they do so? That is the decision Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy have to consider.
