Defending has often proved a conundrum for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. Since arriving at the club, the Gunners have endured some particularly haphazard moments at the back.
Against Chelsea last night, however, one man shone to the fore in the red and white of Arsenal. The 1-0 win was built on a foundation of some superb defending from Brazilian ace Gabriel Magalhaes.
The centre-back checked in at the Emirates Stadium last summer. He cost £23 million from Lille and has largely been impressive for the Gunners this season as he adapts to life in England.

Last night he produced arguably his best performance of the campaign so far. Chelsea had no answer for Arsenal’s defensive solidity and the Gunners stood firm throughout.
Some statistics from Who Scored backed up such a notion and showcased Gabriel for the sound central defender he is becoming at the Emirates Stadium.
He made no fewer than 10 clearances, two tackles and completed 41 passes on an exceptional night for the 23-year-old defender.
Arsenal have already been linked with several central defenders ahead of the summer transfer window. David Luiz is out of contract and several links have been made over who might replace him.
Arteta also has Rob Holding in his ranks, with William Saliba and Dinos Mavropanos to come back into the fold for next season.

If another defender does arrive at Arsenal, however, it shouldn’t be at the expense of the £50,000-a-week Gabriel.
He showcased last night exactly what he is capable of and he still has time on his side. The former Lille man is strong, good in the air and isn’t afraid to put his body on the line.
Arsenal must place their long-term faith in Gabriel.
