Arsenal and Chelsea often go head to head in the transfer market.
The Gunners and the Blues have clashed over the likes of Mykhaylo Mudryk and Declan Rice in recent years, and now, once again, both teams are going after the same player.
Indeed, Riccardo Calafiori has been linked to both Arsenal and Chelsea, with the Gunners said to be lining up a bid for the £40m man this summer.
Speaking on NUFC Matters, Ben Jacobs has been discussing Calafiori’s future, and he says that the Italian has had his head turned by the idea of moving to London as Arsenal and Chelsea are keen.
Riccardo Calafiori’s head has been turned
Jacobs shared what he knows about the defender.
“With Calafiori it would be a surprise if he didn’t leave Bologna, but I would keep a closer eye on Arsenal and Chelsea (than Newcastle) because I think he wants to move to London and he will have more than one Premier League suitor,” Jacobs said.
“Newcastle have work to do with Calafiori. The player has had his head turned by the idea of playing European football and going to London if he can find a deal there, and you have Arsenal and Chelsea who can give him that.”
Arsenal should be favourites
Chelsea often get what they want in the transfer market, but there’s reason to believe that Arsenal should be favourites to win this race.
Jacobs says that Calafiori hasn’t just had his head turned by a move to London, he’s also keen on the idea of playing European football.
Chelsea, of course, will be playing in the Europa League next season, but surely Calafiori will be more drawn to the prestige and honour attached to playing in the Champions League as compared to the Europa League.
This is certainly an interesting situation, and this is a story that could develop quickly in the coming days.
