4 tackles, 6 clearances: Tottenham star shines in win over Manchester City

Tottenham produced a stunning display against Manchester City and in Davinson Sanchez, they had a player buoyed on the back of a new managerial appointment.

The Colombian’s future has come into question this summer. Clubs have shown interest, whilst Cristian Romero has been added to the defensive ranks from Atalanta.

Based on his performance against the champions though, Sanchez has thrown some corn down for his rivals and appears hellbent on proving his worth.

Nuno Espirito Santo has given every player a clean slate. That includes the 25-year-old who has struggled at Tottenham since his arrival from Ajax.

New lease of life for Sanchez at Tottenham

The defender could do now more. Up against some formidable Manchester City attacking options, Sanchez stood firm against the reigning champions.

Who Scored backed up his importance with some interesting statistics. He made four tackles and six clearances, the most of any Tottenham player in both areas. The international also won two aerial challenges during the 90 minutes.

Espirito Santo will have been delighted with his defender. Although new additions are in the pipeline, competition for places is always healthy.

Romero will play having come to the club as a high profile signing. Others will need to step up their game and Sanchez appears to have accepted the challenge.

Does Sanchez now have a future?

Starting the first game in a new era under a new manager is certainly a good sign for Sanchez. He could hardly have picked better opponents to play a blinder against either.

Sanchez was solid against the Citizens and defended extremely resolutely against a very good side.

He has played 150 times for Tottenham and if he can show performances of this nature on a consistent basis he will soon win over his critics.

Sanchez earns £65,000-a-week at Tottenham. On this showing, he could prove important under the new manager and proved himself as an unsung hero yesterday.
