Martinez’s first years on Merseyside was most certainly a tale of two seasons: Sweeping sides apart with fast, attacking football in the first, and the inability to break teams apart in the second. I penned an article for The Boot Room over the summer highlighting that Martinez was at an important juncture of his time as Everton manager.
Coming into his third season, an inadequate transfer window, and a poor showing in the Premier League without the added pressure of European football would have almost signaled the end of his time in the hot-seat; a return to the football of his first season and he would be lauded for the turning around of Everton fortunes. His fate lay in his own hands.
Over the summer, the jury largely remained out for the majority of Everton fans. Many of the Goodison faithful believed that Martinez should be given until Christmas 2015 to be judged.
Yet as we have entered 2016, many are as unsure as they ever were. Ill feeling toward the Spaniard has undeniably grown as the season has dragged on, however, a 2-1 victory over Man City and one foot in the League Cup final has abated the bad mood somewhat. At times Everton’s football has been eye-catching, and the squad Martinez has amassed has some true world class potential (and probably the best seen by the blue half of Merseyside since the title winning sides of the 80s).
Unfortunately for Evertonians, the team is rather not living up to expectations and potential on paper. Some have blamed the tender age of vast swathes of the Everton starting XI, while others have pinned the blame on Martinez and the Board of Directors. However, there most certainly could be improvements on both the touchline and the pitch.
