£38m player isn’t as close to signing for Arsenal as some people think

Arsenal are yet to make their first signing of the summer transfer window, but there have been plenty of rumours as of late.

Indeed, Martin Zubimendi is apparently close to joining Arsenal, but, as of yet, that deal isn’t done.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are keen on Nico Williams, but that move hasn’t advanced either.

This week, reports emerged claiming that Arsenal were close to signing Konstantinos Karetsas in a deal worth £38m, but according to Charles Watts, speaking to Sports Mole, this deal isn’t as close as some would have you believe.

Konstantinos Karetsas not that close to joining Arsenal

Watts shared what he knows about Karetsas after chasing up the early reports out of Greece.

According to the journalist, Arsenal are not as close to sealing this deal as some may suggest.

“There were reports from last week that Arsenal were looking at Konstantinos Karetsas, the report said Arsenal were very close to sealing this deal, do we have any indication this deal is as close as it sounds?” Watts was asked.

“No, no, I think it caught everyone by surprise, not the link but the strength of the reporting on it. Certainly from following up on that story that isn’t the sense I have at all,” Watts said.

“I think there is interest there, but with all top clubs across Europe there is interest in him because of what he’s been doing. I’d never heard of him until Greece destroyed Scotland and he was front and centre of that.”

“I’ve certainly not got the impression from conversations that I’ve had that anything is as majorly advanced as that report made it out to be, I’d take that with a pinch of salt that story. It might end up happening, but it won’t happen tomorrow.”

Greece’s young stars

Karetsas may not be headed to Arsenal, but it may not be long before there are a few Greek stars in the Premier League.

As Watts says, a lot of top clubs are keen on Karetsas, while Charlampos Kostoulas is set to sign for Brighton in a big money move too.

On top of that, Stefanos Tzimas is also at Brighton, while Christos Mouzakitis has been tipped for big things at Olympiacos.

Every so often a nation does bring through a golden generation, and Greece could be on the verge of doing just that.

Karetsas could be a future star, be that at Arsenal or elsewhere.
