Danny Murphy has scathing assessment of Spurs transfer business

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy has given a scathing assessment of the club’s transfer business so far this summer, suggesting none of their current recruits would make their way into the starting XI of rival top six teams.

Tottenham have done some fairly shrewd but hardly mind-blowing transfer business this summer.

They have snapped up proven Premier League performers in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty from Southampton and Wolves respectively. Meanwhile, Chelsea are seemingly recession-proof yet again, Manchester United have signed long-term Spurs target Donny van de Beek and Everton are even on the brink of signing James Rodriguez.

Murphy, who spent one unsuccessful season at White Hart Lane, is clearly of the belief that Tottenham need to do more to get back in contention.

“Poor Tottenham must be envious at all the top names being bandied about,” Murphy wrote in the Daily Mail. “Jose Mourinho has signed Matt Doherty and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, both fine players but wouldn’t get into the Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea or Manchester United teams.

“Only Harry Kane from Mourinho’s squad would be of interest to the English Champions League clubs which suggests getting Spurs into the top four would be one of the biggest achievements of his career.”

It might seem harsh from Murphy. Working on a budget, Tottenham have clearly done a very good job. In particular, the price paid for Doherty could end up looking like a coup.

However, Spurs do need one or two more eye-catching arrivals if they are going to improve on their disappointing 2019-20 campaign.

If not, then Murphy may ultimately be proven right.
