34-time England star says he would join Newcastle, available on a free transfer
Jack Wilshere has told TalkSPORT (Thursday, 5:40PM) that he would jump at the chance to join Eddie Howe at Newcastle – with a four-word response.
Wilshere, 29, is still without a club after leaving Bournemouth at the end of last season. The player has been ravaged by injury over the last few years.
The 34-time England international has since been training with boyhood club Arsenal and remains injury free. He has also been coaching.
For Wilshere, it is certainly surprising a player of his quality is struggling to find a club. He even trained with Italian side Como in the summer.
The midfielder has also been doing punditry work with TalkSPORT and was asked if he would join Newcastle, responding: “Of course I would.”
Wilshere on Newcastle: Should Howe consider free agent move?
It is a difficult one. Newcastle certainly need a midfielder, with a lack of quality in the middle of the park. Jonjo Shelvey looks vital to the new era.
But Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick and Sean Longstaff have been inconsistent over the last few months. Joe Willock is more of a number 10.
In Howe’s 3-4-3, the two midfielders have to be defensively solid – given it is such an attacking formation. Willock played alongside Shelvey last time out.
But Willock is more of a 10. It saw Newcastle concede three times, and bit more of a grafter in midfield might be ideal – such as Wilshere.
Perhaps as a squad player, an option to come off the bench, Wilshere could help Newcastle. But he is a risk, given his injury past.
