It is rare for a player to be so impressive both on and off the pitch, but if Newcastle are to survive for another season in the Premier League, the actions of Lascelles will play a big part in it.

The young centre-back lambasted his team-mates in a post-match interview after last week’s tepid performance against Southampton, questioning the team’s character. He followed this by scoring the crucial opener in the Magpies’ 3-0 win over Swansea which leaves them with a fighting chance of survival.

Again, Lascelles was refreshingly frank and honest in his interview after the game, impressing many with his mature head off the pitch as well as his telling performance on it. If he continues to have this kind of influence, Newcastle may have a chance of survival.
