Up: Jonjo Shelvey
After two and a half good years at Swansea, things went downhill very quickly between England international Shelvey and the South Wales club, and a £12 million exit to Newcastle United looked like the best solution for both parties.
Newcastle knew they were signing a player who has a penchant for both the sublime and the ridiculous, but thankfully for the Toon they were treated to the former with a wonderful performance from their new man. Controlling the play from deep in midfield, his excellent, positive passing made the difference for the Magpies who pulled high-flying West Ham apart in the opening 15 minutes.
A silly shrug on Enner Valencia aside, Shelvey was magnificent and fully deserved the plaudits he received for his debut. If he keeps playing passes like the 70-yard ball to Daryl Janmaat in the build up to Newcastle’s second, it won’t be long before he starts being labelled ‘Xabi A-Jonjo’. A wonderful day for Shelvey.
