Down: Alberto Moreno
The Spaniard could have been put in the down category for his disastrous haircut alone, but his equally disastrous performance against Arsenal is the primary reason for his inclusion in the negative category.
Moreno was initially reprieved by his goalkeeper Simon Mignolet for his first massive mistake of the weekend, diving in rashly on Theo Walcott in the box and conceding a penalty kick. Walcott may have missed the spot kick, but just a minute later found himself in acres of room, which had been vacated by the Spaniard, to fire Arsenal in the lead.
Moreno may have ended up on the winning side, and wasn’t too bad in the second period, but his performance once again showed why Liverpool desperately need a new left-back.
Down: Paddy McNair
Although Sunderland defender Paddy McNair could do very little about his unfortunate own goal, he still earns himself a place in the down category after costing his side a hard earned point at the Etihad Stadium.
The ball bounced off McNair just three minutes after his introduction as Sunderland looked to secure a draw against Pep Guardiola’s dysfunctional Manchester City side. However, his own goal condemned the Black Cats to defeat and spared the fomer-Barcelona bosses blushes.
David Moyes must take some of the blame for McNair’s error, having taken off Jermain Defoe and pinning his own team back, but when it comes to endearing yourself to your new fans, McNair’s failure just about outdoes his manager.
Down: Marko Arnautovic & Shay Given
There are a number of new rules in the Premier League this season, one of those being the clamping down on abuse towards the officials, which now automatically results in a booking.
Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic and Shay Given seemingly forgot about this new rule though, as they both picked up cheap bookings for attempting to remonstrate with referee Kevin Friend. Friend quite rightly brandished cards for the players, who are likely to become the first victims of many to the new rules.
Hopefully this will teach them to keep quiet.
