Manchester United had not lost at White Hart Lane since 2001, but surprise, surprise, Louis van Gaal’s team were completely dismantled by title-chasing Spurs, shipping three goals in six minutes of an embarrassingly heavy defeat.

The result was not the worst thing about the game, however. Van Gaal once again outdid himself with tactical lunacy, playing Antony Martial and Juan Mata (a striker and a number ten) on the wing, Jesse Lingard (a winger) behind the striker and Ashley Young (who know’s what he is these days?) up front on his own.

Now four points behind rivals Manchester City, it looks like United will be facing a season out of the Champions League. If they do, it is hard to see van Gaal surviving the summer.
