It was bad enough that Aston Villa’s relegation was almost confirmed during Saturday’s defeat to Bournemouth without Kieran Richardson’s shocking second half miss.

It was an event that summed up Villa’s season perfectly. A rare moment of quality had opened the Cherries up down the right hand side, and the ball was laid on a plate for Richardson, no more than two yards out, to put Villa level. The ball ran straight through his legs.

Villa were soon 2-0 down and the game was gone. One more week and they will be too.
