Down: Manchester United

After seeing off Liverpool last weekend, drab and uninspiring as it was, many expected Manchester United to be bouncing with confidence as they took on Southampton at Old Trafford this weekend. Sadly for the fans, it was the same old dross that Louis van Gaal’s side serve up week in, week out, and another home defeat was no less than they deserved.

It is not the poor results that is causing van Gaal problems, but the style of play. Every member of that United team is good enough to express themselves and entertain the crowd, winning football matches in the process. At the moment, a Manchester United game constitutes ninety minutes of sideways passing and the occasional shot on target. It is not good enough.

Not only is the style of play atrocious, but United are now five points behind Tottenham Hotspur in fourth, and showing no real signs of improvement. Worrying times ahead.
