Newcastle knew they were in trouble when they sacked Steve McLaren and replaced him with Rafael Benitez, but now they may be resigned to probably relegation after suffering defeat in their must-not lose game against Norwich.

The most crushing factor of the defeat was the late winner after they had battled back from behind twice in the match. Aleksandar Mitrovic, who appears to be on a single handed mission to keep the Toon up, scored twice to appear to snatch a point, but Newcastle’s fragile defence allowed Olsson to drive in a crushing winner.

Six points off Norwich, their chances of survival now look to be diminishing.
