Down: Aston Villa

Now winless in nineteen Premier League games (yes, that is half a season), Aston Villa have around as much hope of avoiding the drop as Joleon Lescott has of becoming England’s top goalscorer after another poor showing at Sunderland.

The problem with Villa this weekend was not the result, as poor as it was, but the manner in which they fell to a fourteenth defeat of the season. Defensively, they were a complete car crash, giving the ball away, rushing up to make tackles, marking poorly and making it a simple job for Sunderland to tear them to pieces.

Adama Traore and Carles Gil deserve praise for their part in a magnificent equalising goal, but the nature in which their teammates gave up, not just on Saturday but also for most of the season was embarrassing. It’s time for someone to step up, or Villa will be sunk within two months.
