A professional footballer has certain duties to the club that employs him, and Southampton’s Sadio Mane failed to meet these requirements when he arrived late for a team meeting ahead of Saturday’s match against Norwich City. Mane was dropped from the starting line-up by an angry Ronald Koeman, and watched his side slump to a 1-0 defeat from the bench.

If it was an isolated incident, Mane would be forgiven for feeling aggrieved at being dropped, but he was also late to the stadium for a game last season. As one of Southampton’s best players, he must make sure he avoids this kind of problem in the future, otherwise he and his team may slip even further down the table and into trouble.
