Down: Martin Demichelis

Manchester City are in serious jeopardy of losing their top four place, and ageing centre-back Martin Demichelis did not help them in their tepid Manchester Derby defeat.

Not only was he completely skinned by 18-year-old Marcus Rashford for the only goal of the game, but he had a torrid time all game. He missed a simple header that would have drawn City level, almost gave away a penalty and then put Joe Hart under so much pressure with an awful backpass that the England goalkeeper injured his calf in an attempt to deal with it.

Demichelis was brought off within minutes, and his horrendous afternoon was over. It didn’t stop him ruining Manchester City’s though.

Down: Martin Skrtel

After spending a couple of months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, Martin Skrtel must have thought he was making an easy return to Liverpool’s first team when he replaced Dejan Lovren at half-time with Liverpool 2-0 up and cruising against Southampton.

However, he immediately gave away a penalty (which was saved by Simon Mignolet), but he was completely destroyed by the likes of Graziano Pelle, Sadio Mane and Shane Long all afternoon. Without Lovren, who has been mightily impressive at the back for Liverpool in Skrtel’s absence, the Reds lost all control of the game and Southampton ran out deserved winners.

Had Skrtel stayed on the bench, they may have been okay. He should stay there next time.

Down: Roberto Martinez

Watching Everton has been very confusing this season. They look magnificent going forward, and have scored the fourth most goals out of any Premier League team, giving them a might goal difference of plus 10. However, they sit a measly 12th in the Premier League.

The problem is simple, Roberto Martinez doesn’t know how to organise a defence. Again, with Arsenal in town, Everton were all over the place. Admittedly, they were missing the calming influence of Gareth Barry who was replaced by the much more erratic Muhamed Besic, but their defence was all over the place, and the Gunners ran rings around them.

The worrying thing now is that Everton have now lost their last four home games, and eight of their nine league defeats have come at Goodison Park. That’s what is so frustrating; Martinez is so close to building a brilliant club, but their defence and home form is nothing better than mediocre. He needs to sort out these problems or Everton will not progress.
