3 reasons why Eric Dier needs to take his chance against Colchester United

Tottenham Hotspur take on Colchester United in Essex on Tuesday night and it is a chance for Mauricio Pochettino to rotate his squad. This EFL Cup fixture is a welcome distraction from Tottenham’s poor league form and Champions League draw.

One player who will be eager to impress is Eric Dier. He needs to take his chance against Colchester if he is selected in the starting line-up. Here are three reasons why this is crucial for Dier.

First chance this season

Dier has not played a single minute of action this season. Towards the end of last season, Dier slipped from being a regular starter to a less-used player. But his role has been reduced since the start of the 2019/20 season.

The ex-Sporting Lisbon player has sat on the bench on six occasions this season without stepping onto the pitch. If he is selected against Colchester, it will be his first chance to perform this term.

Wanyama preferred?

Tottenham lost against Leicester City last weekend and Dier will be frustrated by one of Pochettino’s decisions. On 67 minutes, Pochettino decided to take Moussa Sissoko off but he snubbed Dier to bring Wanyama on.

Wanyama nearly left in the summer and he was brought back from the cold before Dier’s first game. This would add to Dier’s frustration as it is a clear message that he is down the pecking order.

Exit rumours

With Dier failing to get on the pitch all season, he has unsurprisingly been linked with an exit. According to The Daily Star, the 25-year-old is a target for Manchester United.

If he wants to convince Pochettino to give him another chance instead of selling him in January, then he needs to impress against Colchester. It could be the beginning of his Spurs revival.
